Gentle support for sensitive, pigment-prone skin

If you’ve ever struggled with pigmentation, especially melasma or post-acne marks, you’ll know how hard it is to find something that helps without triggering more sensitivity or irritation along the way.

In the clinic, we treat many cases of melasma, pigmentation and post-acne marks, especially among those with sensitive, dry or eczema-prone skin. Conventional lightening products tend to be too harsh for this group, leading to dryness, redness or sensitivity. That’s why we created the Lightening & Soothing Serum, a gentle botanical serum designed to lighten and even skin tone while calming irritation and improving skin resilience.

    Why we created it

This serum was developed over two years, with valuable input from over 40 testers, including 20 patients. Their real-world feedback helped us refine the formula to ensure safety, gentleness and visible results.

We wanted to offer an alternative for those who cannot tolerate medicated lightening creams. Many of our patients with melasma also have underlying issues like dryness and skin barrier weakness, which can worsen pigmentation. We needed something that would support and calm the skin while working steadily on discolouration.

More Than Just a Lightening Serum

A good lightening serum shouldn’t just fade spots—it should also support your skin’s overall health. This multi-tasking formula does exactly that:

☑️ Reduces redness & irritation – Centella Asiatica (Gotu Kola) soothes and hydrates, making it suitable for sensitive, acne-prone and allergy-prone skin

☑️ Balances breakouts & stabilises acne-prone skin – Meadowfoam seed oil and soy-derived phytosterols regulate sebum and reduce the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (pimple marks).

☑️ Boosts and locks in moisture – Polyglycerin-3, made from three glycerin molecules (so it delivers deeper, longer-lasting hydration than glycerin alone), combined with soy-derived lecithin strengthens the skin barrier and improves moisture retention.

    ☑️ Safe for long-term use – Fragrance-free, pregnancy-safe and suitable as an alternative—or complement—to medicated lightening creams.

*No irritation. No peeling. No increased sun sensitivity.*

    Key active ingredients

    • Tetrahydrocurcumin (from turmeric) – a potent antioxidant that reduces pigmentation, inflammation and skin reactivity. In a clinical study, a 0.25% tetrahydrocurcumin cream showed comparable results to 4% hydroquinone in lightening pigmentation, without the side effects.
    • Brightenyl – a microbiome-activated molecule that targets uneven skin tone, reduces redness and calms inflammation.
    • Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) – helps fade dark spots, improve elasticity and calm irritation.
    • Centella Asiatica (Gotu Kola) extract – calms, supports healing and collagen repair, especially useful for stressed or post-acne skin.
    • Meadowfoam Seed Oil – rich in antioxidants and fatty acids. This non-comedogenic oil moisturises while regulating oil production. Suitable for dry, combination and acne-prone skin, and helps reduce the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
    • Polyglycerin-3 – a larger-molecule form of glycerin that offers long-lasting hydration without clogging pores.
    • Phytosterols and Lecithin (soy-derived) – plant-based compounds that support barrier repair, calm sensitivity, improve skin resilience and lock in moisture.

    Formulation notes

    How to use

After cleansing and toning, apply a generous amount to the entire face. Follow with your favourite FOREST MD moisturiser and add sunscreen during the day. Use twice daily and consistently for at least 3 months for optimal results.

Recommended as a gentle alternative to, or in combination with, medicated lightening treatments such as hydroquinone, cysteamine, vitamin C or retinoic acid.

Pro tip: If using more than one serum, apply one in the morning and one at night. We generally recommend not using more than two serums at once.

    What to expect

    • Hydration and comfort within the first two weeks – most users notice improved skin hydration and suppleness early in use.
    • Pigment lightening results may be gradual – this is a botanical product and results take time. Pigmentation has multifactorial causes such as sun exposure, skin barrier issues, stress, hormones, lifestyle habits, underlying chronic illness or medications. Consistency and patience are important.

    Lifestyle tips for pigment-prone skin

Because pigmentation often involves chronic inflammation in the skin, lifestyle factors matter as much as skincare. Leading a low-inflammatory lifestyle gives faster, more stable results.

    • Sun protection – use sunscreen daily and avoid direct sun exposure where possible. Wear UV-protective clothing such as a wide-brimmed hat.
    • Sleep habits – going to bed early, around 10 pm, helps regulate hormonal and inflammatory pathways. Anecdotally, patients who improve sleep timing see more stable melasma.
    • Blue light exposure at night – melasma can worsen with night-time screen use. Blue light-blocking glasses with amber lenses in the evening can reduce pigmentation triggers and improve sleep.
    • Low-inflammatory diet – limiting sugar, including alcohol, dairy and gluten may reduce systemic inflammation that can trigger pigmentation.
    • Stress management – chronic stress affects hormonal balance and inflammation, both key factors in melasma and pigmentation.

    A final note

We cannot cure melasma, but we can often suppress it. This serum was created to support those who struggle with pigmentation yet cannot tolerate harsh treatments. Our hope is that it helps even out skin tone, calm sensitivity and build confidence in your skin.

Pair the serum with diligent sun protection, good sleep and stress management. It is part of caring for your skin and letting your healthiest, most radiant self shine through.
